Description

Reporting to the Head of the Strategy, Programme & Coordination Office of the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes, you will be responsible for coordinating Earth Observation outreach and communication activities – including visualisation of Earth Observation data  and for operating the Φ-Experience Visualisation Facility and Visitor’s Centre at ESA’s ESRIN premises in Frascati, Italy. (A virtual tour of the early stages of the development of the Φ-Experience, which is not a public installation, is provided at this hyperlink).

 

For Earth Observation communication and outreach activities, you will coordinate the development and rollout of targeted communication products which showcase the information value of space-based Earth Observation data. These products will be delivered via a range of methods from print- and web-based materials to small- and large-scale exhibitions, as well as on social media. 

 

You will also ensure that the Φ-Experience and ESRIN Visitors Centre remain the central visualisation facility for ESRIN programmatic activities and Earth sciences, as well as a tool to communicate the Agency’s innovation dimension to a broader public. Additionally, the Φ-Experience should continue to form part of a network of excellence for visualisation techniques and technologies, in cooperation with other players active in this field, in order to serve as a breeding ground for Earth science visualisation techniques and display technologies for exhibitions, events, conferences, symposiums and workshops.

Duties

You will be expected to perform the following:

 

  • lead the annual definition of a strategic plan for Directorate communications and coordinate actions/deliverables related to business-to-business (B2B) outreach activities included in the plan, while helping assess additional ad hoc opportunities as they arise;
  • develop and carry out the production of targeted communication products which showcase the information value of space-based Earth Observation data;
  • work in close cooperation with the ESA Communication Department and Directorate colleagues involved in communication and outreach activities for specific Earth Observation programmes in order to ensure the overall coherence of outreach efforts;
  • support the management of relevant corporate activities, such as events, media relations and corporate exhibitions insofar as they pertain to the Directorate;
  • develop a plan for the routine updating of the Φ-Experience content and supervise its implementation;
  • ensure that the technical functionality of the Φ-Experience is up to date, making improvements as required;
  • manage the teams involved in the operation of the Φ-Experience and ESRIN Visitors Centre and oversee and manage contracts related to the facilities;
  • coordinate and manage visits, preparing content according to the visitors’ backgrounds and interests, all in support of the Directorate and the Head of ESRIN;
  • strengthen and initiate international collaborations related to external content integration, visualisation support, exchange of data and visuals.

Technical competencies

Education

A master's degree in natural or Earth sciences is required for this post.

Other master’s degrees may be considered in cases of significant experience in data visualisation, exhibition development and/or related communication activities

Additional requirements

You should be able to demonstrate examples of relevant previous work in communications, exhibitions and/or data visualisation.

 

Knowledge of scientific disciplines for which Earth Observation is relevant would be an asset.

In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.

 

During the recruitment process, the Agency may request applicants to undergo selection tests.
