Our team and mission
The IT systems and Digitalisation unit of the Estates and Facilities Management (EFM) Department, is responsible for understanding and representing all the EFM technical IT-related needs, to act as liaison between the various ESA Sites across Europe and the ESA IT Department for a meaningful and coherent cooperation, that would ensure the sustainable technological development of the Department and consequently offer reliable advice regarding the optimisation of information technology related resources allocation, and finally, to ensure a highly advanced level of the Department’s Cybersecurity profile and full Personal Data Protection compliance.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship
This opportunity shall offer the experience of interacting with the IT Department’s specialists, the Facility Management engineers at the various ESA sites, while assisting with the efforts of the IT Apps and Digitalisation Unit of the Corporate Services Division of the Facility Management Department.
In more detail, the incumbent shall experience and work on the following:
- Corporate systems:
- activities regarding Facility Management Systems (e.g., Building Management System, Video Security System, etc.);
- activities regarding Facility Management Operational Technology (e.g., Sensors, Automation, etc.);
- engagement with automation tools used at the Sites, aiming to meet the Department’s daily operations needs;
- engagement with automation tools used to meet the Department’s evolution objectives and infrastructure needs;
- interaction with innovative ways where IT technologies would improve existing tasks and processes;
- Data Management:
- practical application of Data Management, including Big Data using state of the art systems, technologies and trends;
- usage of tools and processes that manage Departmental Data both internally and externally;
- interaction with the corporate tools and processes (e.g., Data Factory, Power BI, etc.);
- Cyber Security
- familiarisation with the Cyber Security profile and related matters of the EFM Department;
- interaction with the IT Department and the ESA Security Office specialists / experts with regards to subject matter issues, challenges and projects;
- witness the Cyber Security awareness, defense, and response structure;
- observe how the Sites Operational Technology systems configuration complies with the ESO requirements;
- interaction with the assigned Cyber Security local site representatives.

Education
You should have just completed, or be in the final year of your master’s degree in computer science and/or engineering.
Additional requirements
You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team. Previous experience of working in international teams can be considered an asset. Your motivation, overall professional perspective and career goals will also be explored during the later stages of the selection process.
Knowledge of OT systems and electromechanical systems technologies would be an important asset.
