Type of Contract ESA Graduate Trainee
Directorate:  Navigation
Workplace:

Noordwijk, NL

Grade Band F1 - F1

Location

ESTEC, Noordwijk, Netherlands

Our team and mission

The European Space Agency, in cooperation with the European Union, is developing the Galileo system. Galileo is Europe’s own global navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control. The system is already operational and currently providing initial services. The Galileo Reliability Availability Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) activities are an essential part of the further development of the Galileo system, as they support the design of the system, and during operations, provide important information about the reliability and availability of the system. As an ESA Graduate Trainee, you will be integrated in the Navigation Product Assurance and Safety Office, working directly with the Galileo RAMS team.

You are encouraged to visit the ESA website: http://www.esa.int

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship

During the design phase of the Galileo system, Reliability and Availability performances have been assessed through predictions. The system has been modelled using input data and assumptions, and it is currently providing initial services. Field data are collected (i.e. operating hours, number of failures, outage duration, etc.) in order to measure the operational reliability and availability of the system and compare them with the predictions. In addition, reports on the measured vs. predicted reliability/availability are prepared on a regular basis, for which two tools have been developed to support this activity:

1) Galileo Measured Availability Prediction (GMAP) tool which automatically extracts input operational data and derives the relevant statistics

2) RAMS took for Reliability Block Diagram (RAMBO) which allows to predict reliability and availability of space and ground systems based on their functional and physical breakdown

As ESA Graduate Trainee in the Galileo RAMS team, you will:

  • Use the RAMBO tool to model Galileo satellite and ground systems;
  • Enhance capability of the GMAP tool to report satellite relevant metrics related to delivered services by the Galileo satellites based on data produced by the Time and Geodetic Validation Facility (TGVF) of Galileo system;
  • Enhance satellite end-of-life models to improve reliability assessment to support operational life extension evaluation.

You will then, during the year of recruitment, use the RAMBO tool to build the Galileo satellite and ground system models in order to to predict their reliability and availability based on as-designed and as-observed equipment reliability and logistics data.
You will also produce the Galileo Measured Availability Prediction (GMAP) statistics and prepare the GMAP report which is presented at the Service Exploitation Review with the European Union representatives.
You will finally have the opportunity to familiarize with the RAMS techniques mostly used in the Space Domain and support RAMS modelling activities, e.g. for satellite constellation analyses and yearly Galileo satellites end-of-life review led by European Union Space Programme Agency (EUSPA) and Galileo Service Operator (GSOP).
