Our team and mission

The Systems Security Engineering Section reports to the Head of the Radio Frequency Systems Technology Division in the Electrical Department. In full compliance with the ESA Security Framework, it covers security engineering processes, techniques and technologies for the End-to End (E2E) security of systems, the subsystem, elements and equipment contributing to or implementing specific detection/mitigation and protection measures, the analysis and methodology for vulnerability and risk assessments, and accreditation, certification processes and standards, including system design tools and equipment.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship

You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team working on all aspects of systems security engineering, including ground segments, spacecraft, and communication links. You will work on aspects of modelling and security architecture, following public standards. You will also do hands-on work on a cyber-lab, participating in the setting up of vulnerability assessment activities, the security assessment of protocol implementations, etc., leading (optionally) to the authoring of tools/scripts that provide a system security audit for typical COTS/OSS and security assessment of custom protocols.

 

You will be mentored by experienced professionals and will also be supported by other cyber/security experts in the team, who work closely with them.

Education

You should have just completed or be in the final year of your Master’s degree in computer science, with good knowledge of cybersecurity.

Additional requirements

Programming skills (Python; other programming languages) will be an asset.
Very good knowledge of Linux OS.
Very good knowledge of TCP/IP stack and protocols. 
Hands-on experience of penetration testing/security assessment tools is a plus.

 

You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multi-cultural environment, both independently and as part of a team.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
